Let's Talk Chronic Illness

All of us have had the flu, sore throat or sniffles; an illness that puts us out of commission for a few days. They keep us from work and sidelined from life. Those illnesses are called 'acute.' Other illnesses don't go away, they're 'chronic;' meaning they're always with us and often finds the person who has the chronic illness continually running from doctor to chiropractor to a myriad of specialists and other healthcare practitioners; instead of living.
Chronic illnesses include (but aren't limited to) autoimmune diseases, like lupus, crohn's disease or psoriasis. Hypertension, heart disease and diabetes are also chronic, as are heart disease and cancer. Diabetes, alzheimer's, epilepsy and many lung diseases are but a few examples of the many chronic illnesses that people must deal with daily. They are often manageable, sometimes not, but often diseases of remissions and exacerbations. They are often described as the 'gift that keeps on giving.'

In this column, we'll address many ways in which chronic illnesses can disrupt  lives, not only causing unnecessary physical suffering; but posing financial hardships.
